Program Description

This training examines how implicit bias can shape the way clinicians understand and respond to clients who have experienced complex trauma. Participants will explore how bias may influence perceptions of trauma-related symptoms, behaviors, and responses, and they will gain strategies for applying a more trauma-informed and equitable lens in their clinical work.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify and reflect on implicit biases that may influence how clinicians perceive and respond to individuals who have experienced complex trauma.
  2. Recognize trauma-related symptoms, behaviors, and responses and differentiate them from biased interpretations in clinical practice.
  3. Apply trauma-informed, bias-aware strategies to enhance therapeutic attunement, equity, and effectiveness in working with clients.

About the Presenter

Katie Watson, LCSW-S, MPA, RYT is an attachment-oriented and relational therapist, supervisor, and educator specializing in complex trauma. She has over 12 years of experience supporting adolescents, young adults, and families in higher education, residential, inpatient, and outpatient settings. Her holistic approach integrates cognitive, emotional, somatic, and relational methods to help clients navigate complexity and deepen self-understanding. She is licensed to practice in Texas, Colorado, California, and Arkansas. In addition to her clinical work, Katie is also an Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier who runs far too much for fun.
