Program Description

This training will focus on the foundations of music therapy, history of music therapy, and educating about what music therapy is and is not, and how and why we need to advocate for the profession. We will also be discussing music and music therapy's role in mental healthcare as well as strategies from person-centered music therapy, Neurologic Music Therapy and Music-Based Music Therapy.

Learning Objectives

  1. Come together to better understand what is and what is NOT Music Therapy. Experience a short mindfulness-based music therapy intervention.
  2. Provide an understanding of the types of settings where Music Therapy is effective/is being utilized and the types of interventions used by a Music Therapist.
  3. Provide opportunities to hear about music-based Music Therapy and Neurologic Music Therapy, and how these perspectives/principles could apply to other therapy modalities.

About the Presenter

Edward Hochman is a Board-Certified Music Therapist (NMT) who works primarily with older adults, individuals living with dementia, other neurological disorders, anxiety, depression and more. Edward is a person-centered Music Therapist, understanding that dignity, autonomy, compassion and understanding are all essential parts of humanity and the music therapy process. In addition, music-based music therapy informs Edward’s practice, seeing in clinical settings and in practice how music intrinsically aids in facilitating communication, understanding, growth, care and more. Edward has worked in a variety of settings, in long-term care facilities, medical facilities, teaching adaptive music lessons to individuals with ASD, working with individuals living with traumatic brain injury and with groups on college campuses. In addition to his music therapy work with individuals and groups, Edward has taught general music lessons to individuals ages 6-75+, writes and plays music with friends, attends conferences on music/medicine and enjoys cooking for his family. Edward is an environmentalist, animal-activist and hopes for a world filled with more art and understanding.
