Program Description

As Play Therapists/Child Therapists we are often asked to work within the court system. We will look at our ethical obligation to advocate for our client, our ethical and professional responsibilities to share our expertise and how to communicate, collaborate and educate effectively and confidently within the system.

Learning Objectives

  1. To explore the ethical responsibilities and implications to court involvement as a Play Therapist.
  2. To challenge and explore your own fears, biases, opinions as a Play Therapist/working with children.
  3. To critically apply ethical standards to case study in practice.
  4. To learn ways to effectively navigate ethical responsibilities while working within the system.
  5. To understand the professional responsibilities as a child/Play Therapist of court involvement.
  6. To enhance your ability to clarify and identify your role as a Play Therapist.
  7. Enhance your ability to set structure and limits (with clients and with professionals) as a Play Therapist.
  8. Feel more confident navigating the legal system.
  9. Enhance your professional confidence in collaboration/writing and testifying

About the Presenter

Kate Haberman, LISW, MFT, RPT-S has over 20 years of experience working with children and families. With some field experience investigating child abuse, Kate began working with high risk teens in the inner city of Milwaukee. Kate has expertise working with couples and families, sexuality, attachment, trauma and generational anxiety. After receiving her Masters in Social Work and her Marriage and Family Therapy Certificate from UW-Milwaukee, Kate moved to Iowa and worked as a residential Therapist and provided individual, family and group therapy.  In 2010 Kate was the co-owner and clinical director of Monarch Therapy Services and in 2020 opened The Center for Foundational & Relational Wellness, LLC, a Holistic and Clinical Mental Health agency.  She has found a way to integrate both clinical and holistic therapies which has allowed her to best utilize her specialization in Trauma and Attachment.  Kate has trained under Dr. Kottman and Holly Van Gulden and partners with Retrieving Freedom to incorporate service dogs in training into her therapy practice.  Kate also teaches at Wartburg College.  Kate is a registered play therapist and play therapy supervisor, a state approved social work supervisor and is trained in TheraPlay and Filial Therapy.  Kate was awarded Play Therapist of the Year in 2020.  Kate serves as an expert witness, professional consultant and offers professional trainings throughout the state.  Kate is married and is a former foster, adoptive parent and birth parent to an 13year old daughter and 9 year old twins.
